Cataract Evaluation and Surgery

A cataract is the clouding of our natural lens in the eye that most often occurs as we age, resulting in hazy vision. Many people with cataracts initially have difficulty with night vision, reading, or diminished color perception. Successful cataract surgery is performed on over 3 million people per year in United States and is the most common out-patient procedure. Dr. Lee has performed over 20,000 cataract surgeries, with a focus on refractive cataract surgery to minimize or eliminate dependence on glasses for distance and near vision after cataract surgery. He uses advanced technology toric or multifocal intraocular lenses and also performs laser-assisted cataract surgery when appropriate, but can help patients achieve great results with standard intraocular lenses as well. Most patients achieve driving vision or better as early as the day following surgery and quickly return to normal activities. Dr. Lee has been recognized as a top doctor in Metro Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey for many years. He operates at Main Line Surgery Center in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania, Wills Eye Surgery Center in Cherry Hill, and Surgical Center of South Jersey in Mt. Laurel.

Comprehensive Ophthalmology

Comprehensive eye exams include more than spectacle or contact lens prescriptions. Thorough evaluation of your visual system can reveal systemic diseases like diabetes and hypertension, or side effects from certain long-term medications. Most ocular examinations require pupil dilation, but Lee Vision Associates is proud to offer Optos wide field fundus imaging that allows high tech views of the retina and optic nerve without the use of dilating eye drops in patients with narrow angles or patients who are otherwise unable to tolerate dilation. The images can be a key tool for patient education because when it shows pathology, the doctor can point out exactly where it is located and what to monitor on an on-going basis.

Glaucoma Management

Glaucoma is a disease that damages the optic nerve, typically from high intraocular pressure, and causes loss of peripheral vision and eventually central vision. It affects millions of people in the United States and can be asymptomatic for many years. It may be the most important reason for regular eye examinations.

If glaucoma is detected during the exam or the patient has sufficient risk factors, additional testing is typically necessary for full diagnosis and management, including tonometry, pachymetry, gonioscopy, visual field, and imaging studies like OCT and optic nerve photography. Lee Vision Associates is proud to offer state-of-the art diagnostic equipment including Zeiss HFA3, Zeiss OCT and Optos wide field fundus imaging that allow for early detection and treatment of glaucoma.

Diabetic Eye Care

Although diabetes can cause early cataracts and glaucoma, the most frequent associated ocular condition is diabetic retinopathy. Diabetes can cause abnormalities in retinal blood vessels at the back of the eye that are asymptomatic initially but can progress to serious vision loss. Treatment for diabetic retinopathy is much easier and more successful during its early stages. Regular eye examinations are very important for detection of diabetic retinopathy. Lee Vision Associates utilizes Optos wide field fundus imaging that can detect diabetic retinopathy, often without the need for dilating eye drops. This technology is the latest advancement in carefully monitoring disease progression.

Diagnostic Equipment and Lasers

Lee Vision Associates has invested in the latest diagnostic equipment and lasers for advanced eye care:

Zeiss IOLMaster – provides accurate and precise biometry to aid in the selection of the optimal intraocular lens choice for cataract surgery.
Zeiss OCT – images layers of the optic nerve and retina to detect and aid in the treatment of a wide variety of ocular diseases like glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration. In addition, the latest version can image the anterior segment of the eye to detect narrow angle glaucoma and corneal diseases.
Optos wide field fundus imaging – provides comprehensive surface view of the optic nerve and retina even through undilated pupils and often through dense cataracts. The Optos minimizes diagnostic surprises like undetected retinal tears or holes and allows serial examinations of the optic nerve and retina.
Zeiss HFA3 – is an advanced visual field analyzer that detects visual field deficits typically in a few minutes. It is an important part of detecting and managing glaucoma as well as visual deficits from neurological diseases and side effects of systemic medicines.
Zeiss YAG Laser – delivers precise and accurate laser energy for glaucoma and secondary cataract care.
